Hamlet is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, written between 1599 and 1601.1 2 The play , set in Denmark , recounts the story of how Prince Hamlet tries to avenge the death of his father , Hamlet , King , executed by Claudius, his brother the poisoned and then took the throne by marrying the queen. The piece draws a map of the course of life in the real madness and feigned madness - from overwhelming grief to fervent rage - and explores themes of treachery , revenge, incest, corruption and morality.
Despite the enormous research that is done on the text, the exact year in which Shakespeare wrote it remains in debate. Three early versions of the play have survived to the present day: these are known as the First Quarter (Q1), the Second Quarto (Q2) and the First Folio (F1) [a] Each of these has lines or even scenes that are absent in. other. It is believed that Shakespeare wrote Hamlet based on the legend of Amleto, preserved in the thirteenth century by the chronicler Saxo Grammaticus in his Gesta Danorum and later taken up by François de Belleforest in the sixteenth century, and a supposed piece of Elizabethan theater now known as Ur -Hamlet. Given the dramatic structure and depth of characterization, Hamlet can be analyzed, interpreted and debated by different perspectives. For example, scholars have puzzled for centuries about Hamlet's hesitation in killing his uncle. Some see the act as a technique to prolong the plot of the action, but others see it as the result of pressure exerted by the complex philosophical and ethical issues surrounding the murder in cold blood, the result of a calculated revenge and a frustrated desire. More recently, psychoanalytic critics have examined the unconscious mind element of Hamlet, while feminist critics reassess and rehabilitate the character of characters such as Ophelia and Gertrude. Hamlet is the longest play of Shakespeare, and probably more work gave him
